How to become a prop trader, and how challenges actually end
A field guide to prop challenges: what you are buying, how accounts fail, what to read before you pay, and what a pass does not guarantee.
A prop challenge is a paid exam attached to a set of rules. The firm is not hiring you in the employment sense, and the large number in the product name is not cash sitting in your name. You pay for the right to trade inside those rules. If you meet them, the agreement may let you request a reward. If you break them, the account ends and the fee is usually gone.
What you buy
Rules
A fee buys an evaluation, not a salary and not the nominal balance.
What ends it
A line
Daily loss, max loss, or a holding rule. One breach is enough.
What a pass is
A stage
The next account has its own conditions. It is not a wire transfer.
What we will not invent
A rate
No pass-rate, no ‘best firm’, no discount dressed up as a rule.
Start from the market you already trade
Firms group themselves as forex and CFD, futures, crypto, or stocks. Those are not the same exam with a different logo. A futures combine is built around a session and a contract size. A forex challenge is built around a percentage of a nominal balance and often around weekend and news rules. A crypto product may be an evaluation, an instant account, or a live-exchange arrangement. Read the asset class first. Then read one programme, not the brand.

The path, in the order that keeps you solvent
- Name the market and the session you will actually trade. If you cannot, you are not choosing a challenge. You are choosing a logo.
- Open the firm’s own rule page, not a discount page. Write down the daily line, the overall line, and the mechanism: static, trailing intraday, or trailing at the end of day.
- Write the target per phase, the minimum days, and any consistency cap. A 10% target with a 40% best-day cap is a different exam from a 10% target with no cap.
- List every charge on its own line: initial, activation, reset, subscription, data, and anything that is conditional. Add them. Do not divide the fee by the nominal balance and call it value.
- Read holding, news, copy-trading and automation. ‘Not mentioned’ is unknown. Unknown is not allowed.
- Read what happens after a pass: another simulated stage, a reward request, a review, a delay, a cap. Copy the sentence. Do not paraphrase it into ‘I get funded’.
- Check whether your country is allowed, in the firm’s text, dated. A directory flag is not eligibility.
- Only then look at the price. If the rule page and the checkout disagree, stop. That disagreement is the product.
How accounts actually end
Most challenges do not end because the trader ‘was not profitable enough’. They end because a loss line was crossed, or a rule outside the chart was broken. The chart can be green and the account can still be dead.
The loss line
- A static floor stays where it was printed. You know the number on day one.
- A trailing floor follows your peak. A good morning can raise the line that kills you in the afternoon.
- End-of-day trailing is not the same as intraday trailing. If the page does not say which, the mechanism is unknown and a calculator should refuse.
- A daily loss can be a percentage of the start-of-day balance, of the initial balance, or of equity including floating loss. The word ‘daily’ does not say which.
- A futures daily limit is sometimes an objective, not a disqualification. Read the sentence. Do not import the forex meaning.
The rules that are not on the candle
- Holding through a weekend, or through a session close.
- Trading a named news window, including the minutes before and after.
- A best-day cap that voids a target you have already hit.
- A minimum number of days, so one large day cannot finish the phase.
- Copying, third-party bots, or an expert advisor the firm did not allow.
- Inactivity. Some accounts end because you did not trade.
Size for the floor, then look at the target
Pick the loss you can actually take in a day without moving your stop. If the daily line is 5% of 100,000 nominal, the line is 5,000 of that nominal, not 5,000 in your bank. Your position has to be small enough that a normal losing day does not spend the line. Traders invert this. They size for the profit target, hit the daily line on a Tuesday, and buy a reset on Wednesday. The reset is a second fee. It is not a refund of the first decision.
Before the card is charged
- I can say the daily line as a number, not a slogan.
- I can say whether the floor is static or trailing, and when it moves.
- I know the target of this phase, not ‘the account’.
- I know if a best day can be too big.
- I know if I may hold overnight and through the weekend.
- I have added every fee, including the reset I will be offered after a fail.
- I have not treated a directory rating, a review count, or a percent-off badge as a rule.
- I know this is simulated or conditional until the agreement says otherwise.
What ‘passing’ is, and is not
A pass means you met the written conditions of that phase. The next sentence on the page tells you what you receive. Sometimes it is another simulated phase with a lower target. Sometimes it is the right to request a reward, which a person at the firm may still review. Sometimes the page is silent. Silence is not a payout date.
- A reward share is a percentage of profit the agreement defines. It is not a salary and it is not paid on the nominal balance.
- A first eligibility date is not a bank credit. Processing, method, and a minimum request sit in between.
- A firm can reserve discretion. If the page says the firm may withhold, believe that sentence. Do not average it away with a forum post.
- Scaling plans and higher shares are later contracts. They are not included because the homepage mentioned them.
Instant products are a different purchase
Some names skip the evaluation and sell an account that is already ‘live’ in their wording. Read whether there is a target, a daily line, and a fee that recurs. An instant row on a platform catalogue is still not the firm’s terms. On this desk, Instant Funding and the WSFunded instant listing stay drafts until an evaluation, if any, is read on the firm’s own page. Do not let the word instant do the reading for you.
Other people’s numbers
A comparison site can show a star rating, a review count, a maximum allocation and a discount. Those are marketing and reputation signals. They do not tell you the daily line. A platform catalogue can show a price that already includes a code. That price will not match the firm’s checkout next week, and it may not match it today. Use those pages to discover that a firm exists. Then open the firm. If you cannot find the rule, the honest record is blank.
A month of practice before you pay anyone
- Week one. Trade your own platform at the size you would use on a challenge. Write down the worst day in nominal terms. That number is your daily line. If a product’s daily line is smaller, you do not fit it.
- Week two. Add the firm’s other rules on paper: no weekend, no news, a best-day cap. Count how many of your real trades would have breached. The strategy that only works by holding Friday is not a candidate for a firm that forbids it.
- Week three. Do the target maths. If the phase wants 10% and your capped best day is 3%, you need a sequence of days, not a single idea. If you cannot describe that sequence, you are hoping.
- Week four. Add the fees, including two resets. If that total changes whether you can pay rent, you are not buying an evaluation. You are spending money you needed. Stop.
After you are in
- Check the line before the session, not after the loss. Trailing floors move.
- Stop for the day when you are near the daily line. The last trade is the one that buys the reset.
- Keep a note of news times if the firm has a window. ‘I forgot the clock’ is still a breach.
- Do not add a second firm to ‘diversify’ until you can pass the first set of rules on paper. Two daily lines are two ways to pay.
From the UK, or anywhere else
Residence rules are part of the contract. A city on a website is not the place of incorporation, and a directory flag is not permission for your country. If the firm’s page does not name your country, the status is unknown. Do not infer it from a flag icon. Tax on a reward, if you ever receive one, is your question for an adviser, not a line this guide can invent.
